Service Challenge Spotlight: Northwest High School

Welcome, Readers! Mya, here.

Here at AMF we love hearing about how our program students are making an impact in their communities, but what we love even more is sharing their impact with all of you! Our Service Challenge asks students to find a need in their community and address it through pledged projects. This allows students who attended our Youth Leadership Seminar to take knowledge and skills they learned and apply them to their own community.

Today’s Service Challenge Spotlight is about Northwest High School and their “Pre-Prom” extravaganza. An identified issue discussed at YLS was the interaction between the student body and their special needs students. A few of their student leaders noticed that at their Senior Prom, the special needs students were less inclined to participate in the dancing and other events and wondered if they were merely overwhelmed by the people and the event.

Thus the “Pre-Prom” was born!

On March 28th from 6-8pm, the U-Knighted Knights will invite the unit kids from Northwest and Colerain to come to Northwest HS for a pre-Prom dance.  And the impact doesn’t stop there! They’ve even gotten members of their community involved with their project. The students’ parents will be invited to escort them, and the event will be catered by one of their school sponsors.  Their AD is going to DJ the event and they’ll even have students from their Cosmetology class from Butler Tech lined up to take beauty appointments for students attending that night.

We’re so proud of these students for making a difference in their community. Way to go, Northwest!

Have a Service Challenge Project coming up? Let us know about it! We’d love to get involved. Email with any questions, concerns or to tell us about the great work your students are doing.

Until next time,

Become an AMF Straight “A” Student

Hey Readers, it’s Mya.

While there’s always a lot of exciting things we’re planning here at the Foundation, we wanted to share one specific one with you today: Our Straight A Scholarship!

What is Straight “A”?

Here at AMF we attach a new meaning to the term “Straight As.” This scholarship awards high school students who are pursuing Academic excellence, Athletic Achievement, is Actively serving in the community while possessing a strong Ambition, a winning Attitude and the ability to overcome Adversity.

How do I become an #AMFScholar?

This scholarship is interesting because students don’t apply. So you’re probably asking, “If I can’t apply, how can I be a part of this opportunity?” Great question, reader! A potential candidate must be nominated by a teacher, administrator, coach, community member, etc. for the Straight “A” Scholarship to be considered.

Who can be Nominated?

Something really cool about this AMF program is that any high schooler in our Area of Impact can be nominated and recognized as an #AMFScholar. However, only seniors are eligible to receive scholarship money toward their college education. The link to nominate can be found here.

What Happens if I’m Chosen as a Finalist?

Each of our finalists will be invited to the Straight A Luncheon at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse, where they will receive a $2,000 scholarship. One overall male and one overall female Straight “A” Student of the Year will be chosen and awarded an additional $3,000 for a total of a $5,000 scholarship.

How Much Time do I Have Left?

The nomination deadline for Straight “A” is February 28th, 2020. With that being said, don’t hesitate to nominate your deserving students ASAP! There is less than a month left until the deadline and we want to make sure as many students are aware of this opportunity as possible.

How Long does this Process Take?

This very quick process takes 5-10 minutes to complete and we ask for information about students based on our AMF Straight “A”s.
